POPULAR DESTINATIONS
BADA BAGH
The place of cremation/ground of the Royal
family known as Royal Cenotaphs. Oldest of which dates
back to the Twelfth Century. The pyramidal are the oldest
built in the Rajput Style. The spherical are later in
the Mughal style. The artificial season’s lake was
built by Maharawal Jait Singh in Fifteenth Century and
faces a garden on the other side. Bada Bagh in local language
implies to big garden.
BARAMSAR
Is a Rajput village. Here one can see
the typical Rajput’s village life, customs, culture
which differs from that of other communities.
BAISAKHI
This was a budhist monastery dates back
to around 2000 B.C. Later in 18th century the Jains made
a Chhatri for some miraculous religious reason and there
after it became a pilgrimage centre of the Jain community.
The village houses , a castle and a temple of mahadev.
There is a pool with natural spring which basically helped
the people to settle there. The Hindus celebrate a festival
herein the month of Baisakhi. Many Hindu monks chose this
place for mediation and one can see wall-painting rather
sketches of the monks here.
RAM KUNDA
Is on the bank of the river Kak which
was flowing in the ancient ages and it is said that the
son of Lord Brahma, Kak meditated here and hence the river
got the name Kak. People believe that the water of Kak
had miraculous healing effect. It has got a mention in
the story of Moomal Mahendra. There are two temples of
Lord Krishna and one is of Lord Hanuman.
ROOPSI
It is modern village.
LODURVA
The capital of the Bhati Rajputs from
8th Century to 12th Century . They came to Ludarwa in
8th Century from Deorawal now in Pakistan. According to
the available history the Jain Temple here is of B. C.
era and the main incarnation of Parashvnathji has got
an inscription on it which says that it is the old capital
of Jaisalmer. Kalpa Vriksha which is a mythological tree
made out of the Astha Dhatu (the eight materials) was
built in the 18th century by Himmatramji Patwa is worshipped
by hindus and jains. There is a black cobra here and the
Jain worships it. It is believed that the sight of it
is a good omen and a mode of blessings.
DAMODRA
The route from Chathrail to Damodra is
through agricultural land. The villagers grow millet and
wheat. During rainy season the rain fall is between 2.5
to 6.5 inches (per annum). Damodra is an abandoned village
of Paliwal Brahmins which was occupied by Sodha Rajputs
in 19th Century.
SAM SAND DUNES
Near Sam Village, there is a band of sand dunes
now fenced by the district authorities to avoid further
encroachment . It is situated along the border road. The
sun rise and the sun set at the Dunes have it’s
own beauty. It is predominantly a Muslim village and other
clothes here.
KHABA
Is an ideal village of Paliwal Brahmins which
was abandoned around mid of 19th Century by the then Prime
Minister Salim Singh. History reveals that Salim Singh
being Mohta by caste, wanted to marry a girl from Paliwal
Brahmins . Because of the caste system, the Paliwals objected
to it and Prime Minister started using evil devices to
make the Brahmins permit him to marry that girl. On being
refused he started torturing them. Because of it the Paliwal
Brahmins fled from Jaisalmer to the nearby states in over
night. There were eighty four villages of Paliwal Brahmins
in the princely state of Jaisalmer in those days. Khaba
is a testimonial of their prosperity and part of this
village is occupied by Sodala Rajputs now.
GHURIA
Is a Muslim Village. The inhabitants make really
beautiful embroidery. It is fine example of the desert
handicrafts.
KHABIA
Also produces the simplicity of the desert jewelers.
DEHDHA
One can see the harmonious life of various castes
in one village here. They are Meghawals – The leather
processors fourth class among Hindus, The Muslims, The
Naiya-Brahms.
JAJIYA
Hindu potters namely Kumhars live here. Most
of them are farmers now.
KULDHARA
Is another abandoned Paliwal Brahmins village.At
one time it is said to be a well planned town.
MOOLSAGAR
Mool Sagar built by Maharwal Mool Raj-I in 15th
century is a picnic place. From the deep well people draw
water with the help of camel to irrigate the vegetable
garden . The camel leather bucket used for of drawing
water attracts special attention of all visitors. There
are some nice idols on the walls, which are example of
fine sculpture.
MUNDRI
Village is more than 150 years old and has population
of 60 to 80 people.Now approximately 15 houses are inhabited
and rest lies in ruin. The main occupation of the people
is cattle grazing. But till the 18th Century end the people
were cannon shooters and served in the Royal Army of Jaisalmer.
Village has mainly Hindus and Muslims.
MASURDI
Village is more that 400 years old. The villagers
used to work in the field of the Paliwal’s and now
they are the owner of the that land. There are Hindus
and Meghwals in this village and main occupation is farming,
cattle, weaving carpets and floor mats of camel and goat
hair. The population is not more than 100 people with
fifty homes of Thatched roof.
CHATRAIL
Village has its own significance. People in the
older days provided ration to the Caravans coming form
the other countries. It is more than two hundred years
old with a population of 300 peoples and 100 houses, mainly
of thatched roof now; their occupation is cattle grazing
, weaving of carpets floor mats and blanket, made out
of camel hair. It is a Muslim village.
SALKHA
Is 200 years old with a population of about 100
people with 15 houses. Their main occupation in the past
was to protect the caravans from desert bandits and ensure
safe passage to the caravans to their respective destinations.
Now their occupation is mainly farming and cattle breeding.
Rajputs are main inhabitant of the village. |
